This is the personal photography site of Nigel Williams. I have written this in plain English rather than the usual boilerplate.
What this site collects
If you just read. Google Analytics records that a visit happened: which pages were opened, roughly where in the world you are, what sort of device you used, and which site or search sent you. It does not tell me who you are, and I never see a name or an address. Nothing is counted unless you agree to it first.
If you leave a comment. The name, email address, and website you type into the form are stored, along with the comment and your computer’s network address. The name and the comment are published; the email address is not.
If you email me. I keep the email, as anyone would.
That is the lot. There is no shop, no mailing list, and no newsletter.
Cookies
There are three sorts of cookies on this site. Only the first needs your agreement:
- Google Analytics sets one so that a visitor reading four pages is counted as one person rather than four.
- Cloudflare, which protects the site from attack, sets one to tell people apart from robots. The site needs this to work.
- The comment form offers to remember your details so you do not have to type them again.
You can accept or decline the analytics one when you first arrive, and change your mind at any time using the Manage consent tab at the bottom of the page.
Google, and where the data goes
Analytics is Google’s, so the information about your visit is processed by Google and held on its servers, including servers outside the United Kingdom. I use it to see which articles people read and which they do not. That is all it is for.
Links to other sites
There are a great many, mostly to camera history and to other photographers. Once you follow one you are on someone else’s site under someone else’s rules, and I have no say in what they do.
What I do not do
I do not sell, rent, or pass on anything about you.
How long I keep things
Comments stay for as long as the article does, unless you ask me to remove yours. Emails I keep for as long as they are useful. Google keeps the visit data for 14 months and then deletes it.
Your rights
You can ask me what I hold about you, ask me to correct it, or ask me to delete it. There is no charge, and I will answer within a month. Email me at hello@flashofdarkness.com and I will sort it out.
If you think I have handled something badly and I have not put it right, you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk.
